Arizona renter says he was fined $4,000 for leaving negative reviews about property but is that even legal?

Adrian Paull and his wife were fined $4,000 for posting negative online reviews about their rental experience in Scottsdale, Arizona, violating a clause in their lease that penalized tenants for unfavorable feedback.

The Consumer Review Fairness Act (CRFA) protects consumers from being penalized for honest reviews, making it illegal for companies to enforce contract clauses that punish customers for truthful feedback, whether online or offline.

Denali Real Estate, the property management company involved, backed down and removed the non disparagement clause from its contracts after facing public scrutiny, but it remains unclear if they will drop the charges against Paull, who has filed complaints with various agencies.
